Lumo tips: Stay warm at home
Radiators
The apartments are usually heated with radiators. The radiators are heated with warm water, adjusted according to the outdoor temperature, that circulates inside the radiators. The temperature of the water is often decreased during the night in order to save energy. Radiators must not be covered and the circulation of air around them must not be prevented. Also bear in mind that radiators are not meant for drying laundry. In wet facilities, radiators should be kept on during the summer as well.
Can you hear a drippling sound inside the radiator, or is the top part of the radiator cold when the lower part is warm? This means that the radiators require venting. If you have no previous experience in venting radiators, contact the maintenance company for assistance.
Radiator valves
You can use the manually adjustable radiator valves to decrease the amount of heat released by the radiator. It is always a good idea to make use of free heat generated by the sun, a large number of visitors or during cooking.
The thermostat valve automatically opens and closes the radiator according to the temperature. That is another reason why the radiator could also be warm only on the upper part. It is recommended to screw the thermostat valves open and close them again a few times during the summer in order to prevent the valves from getting stuck. Covering the thermostat valves with furniture or curtains disturbs the proper functioning of the valves.
Electrical heating
Electrical heating is a common method of heating, especially in small houses and townhouses located outside of the district heating network. The apartment is heated by using electrical radiators and underfloor heating cables, and the cost of heating is included in the resident’s electricity bill. Electrical radiators must not be covered, and textiles or pieces of clothing must not be hung on them.
