Petonen
Petonen is a large residential area in the southern part of Kuopio's urban area, 10-12 km from the city centre. The districts of Petonen are Pirtti, Pitkälahti and Litmanen. The construction of the Petonen Park Town was started in 1986. The building stock consists mostly of detached and terraced houses, although the Pyörö area, which is considered the centre of Petonen, is clearly dominated by apartment blocks. In the southern part of Petonen, business areas such as Matkus and Kylmämäki are being built.
Services
The main services in the area are located in the immediate vicinity of the esplanade-style Pyörönkaari. Petonen has its own social and health care centre, library, parish centre and leisure centre. There are several grocery stores, pizzerias, hairdressers and other specialised shops in the area. There is also an R-kiosk, a pharmacy and postal services in Petonen.
Primary education in Petonen is provided by the Pyörö, Pitkälahti, Pirti and Aurinkorinte schools. There are also several kindergartens in the area.
Lippumäki swimming pool and indoor sports facilities, as well as Litmasen field, provide sports facilities in Petoski. The Lippumäki Sports Centre, to be completed in 2020, will include an artificial ice rink, a gym, artificial grass fields, a training ice rink and the largest hyperbaric hall in the Nordic countries. There is also the Lippumäki skate park, which is very popular with young people. There are also numerous beaches in Petonen, the largest and most famous of which is Kirveslahti. There is also a construction container on the beach, which is used by open-air swimmers in winter.
Transport links
The travel time from Petonen to the centre of Kuopio is about 10-30 minutes, depending on the means of transport. There is a direct motorway connection from Petonen to the centre of Kuopio. You can also walk or cycle, as there are light traffic routes all along the route. There are also several stops in the area for the Kuopio Vilkku-fillers, Kuopio's electric assisted city bikes. There are extensive bus connections to the area from all over the city.
