Make your rental home unique by combining new and old
With second-hand finds, you can create a unique, sustainable, and budget-friendly decor for any home. Mjuk’s creative designer, Thea Kiukas, shares tips for finding second-hand treasures and making a rental home feel personal without renovations.
A harmonious home is created when the decor’s theme ties together both vintage finds and newer furniture, believes Mjuk’s creative designer, Thea Kiukas.
When similar textures and colour schemes meet, the decor becomes balanced and stylish – even if the items are from different eras.
“An old piece of furniture brings a lovely contrast to an otherwise modern home. If the rest of the decor is, for example, very minimalist, a detailed and striking second-hand item can break the pattern in a good way and add a touch of personality,” Kiukas reflects.
Make a rental home personal without renovations
Even if renovating your rental home is not always possible, small decor solutions can easily create a personal look.
In this case, circular economy furniture is key: you can decorate with respect for style, your wallet, and the environment. Combining new and vintage items can bring a unique atmosphere to the space.
“A rental home should definitely look and feel like your own. You can create your own atmosphere with colours, lighting, and textiles without even needing to paint the walls.”
Find the best treasures second-hand
If you want to add second-hand finds to your home, Kiukas advises visiting traditional flea markets or online shops.
Nowadays, many stores and apps offer a wide selection of second-hand furniture and decor items, making buying used goods as easy as getting new ones.
“I think it’s a no-brainer to look for items primarily second-hand. Circular economy furniture saves both money and the environment.”
When buying used furniture, always ensure the piece is clean and free of pests. Sofas and beds can also be safely bought second-hand, as Mjuk’s selection of furniture is always cleaned or even unused, Kiukas encourages.
Although a second-hand piece might sometimes require restoration or styling, Kiukas encourages preserving the item’s original charm.
“For example, you can change the handles but don’t need to modernise everything. The best finds are those that already have their own character and history.”
Express your style with second-hand
Do you want to quickly adopt the latest trends or cherish the classics of past decades? Anything is possible. Kiukas is inspired by the colourful retro-futurism and trumpet shapes of the 1960s.
“My favourite treasure is a Murano mushroom lamp that I found second-hand. I love its design.”
Since fashion and trends vary, there is no single right way to decorate. While it’s good to draw inspiration from fashion, Kiukas advises listening to your own preferences first.
“For example, it’s lovely to be inspired by trendy colour schemes or patterns, but purchases should be made calmly, respecting your own style. Even second-hand items shouldn’t be bought recklessly, but thoughtfully.”
