Enchanting homes: Jenni's small flat filled only with beautiful things
Jenni Janas has created a colourful and cheerful atmosphere in her 26-square-metre Lumo home, where every detail tells a story and reflects its resident’s personality.
When you open the door to this compact studio in Finnoo, Espoo, you're greeted by a burst of colour. The walls are white, but the textiles, furniture, artwork and other interior details are full of vibrant shades. As the finishing touch, pink tile stickers brighten the kitchen splashback. Jenni Janas has skilfully turned her rented flat into a lively and cosy space.
“I’ve only chosen things here that I absolutely adore. I feel super happy at home when I’m surrounded only by beautiful things,” says Jenni.
Jenni finds inspiration especially on Pinterest and social media. Her way of decorating is intuitive and often starts with a single charming find.
“When I fall in love with something, the idea or the object simply finds its way here and blends into the interior,” she explains.
A home dream born from friendship
Jenni has lived in her current home for about six months. Moving to Espoo—and to this particular building—was no coincidence. Her close friend Anni lives in the neighbouring staircase, which first sparked her interest in the area.
“Every time I visited Anni, I thought I’d love to live here. Then I started checking whether there were any flats available. When I found this one, I fell in love instantly,” Jenni recalls.
She considers the layout ideal – a spacious open-plan kitchen along one wall of the living room and a peaceful alcove for the bed.
Jenni’s interior is full of colour, especially pinks and blues. In fact, nearly every object has colour, since her philosophy is that even practical items can be beautiful. She describes her home as rather girly.
“Not quite dopamine décor, but definitely full of life.”
The home strongly reflects Jenni’s personality. She describes herself as cheerful, colourful and a little childlike. She isn’t afraid to let her home show who she is and what she loves.
“This home is simply just like me. Guests always say it looks so much like my place,” she smiles.
Previously Jenni lived with a partner, which also influenced the interior. Although her ex accepted her abundant and colourful style, Jenni wanted to take both their preferences into account.
While many of the objects in her current home were also in the previous one, she now feels she can truly express her own style.
“Now I can be even more playful with everything. And I don’t need to worry about whether someone else likes it.”
Treasured memories and meaningful details
Jenni’s home is full of meaningful items that carry stories and memories of loved ones. Her late grandmother’s lace doily has pride of place on the coffee table, and a rooster-shaped toothpick holder inherited from her is among the most cherished treasures.
Her young nephews, aged two and four, are beloved visitors, and their presence has also left its mark on the interior. They always explore the same items, such as the Lego flowers, and discuss which blossom belongs to whom. Sometimes accidents happen – a stain appears or something breaks – but that doesn’t bother Jenni. She believes a home doesn’t have to be perfect.
“If the boys accidentally break something, I just think even a broken object can be beautiful. I don’t mind if life shows in it.”
A place to unwind
For Jenni, home means above all a safe haven where she can be herself and relax. She loves the idea of constantly having visitors, but sometimes she craves quiet time alone, knitting socks in front of the television.
“It’s truly wonderful that I have my own place where I can just be by myself,” she says.
For Jenni, an enchanting home is one that feels personal and is a place where she genuinely enjoys being – whatever that may mean for each individual.
