Enchanting homes: Roosa's unique home is full of secondhand treasures and bold combinations

Roosa's interior design strongly reflects her personal style – a mix of 80s bohemian vibes, romance, bold colors, and plenty of paintings, plants, and decorative objects.

Located in the Ankkuri area of Lahti, the Lumo home is filled with colors, patterns, plants, and artwork. Roosa Mäkinen’s husband describes the kitchen as having a "grandmother's cottage" feel, while friends find the home cozy. "Some might say that you have all kinds of weird stuff here," Roosa says, laughing.

Dried flowers and tile stickers add color to the white kitchen.
Roosa decided that candle holders work just as well as wine glasses.

Roosa has lived in the Lumo home for seven years, and in the current four-room apartment for four years. This home is shared with her partner, their 3-year-old daughter, and her husband’s teenage son.

Roosa believes the home’s atmosphere is a blend elements of the 80s, bohemianism, and gothic romance.

"Almost all of our furniture is either from relatives or secondhand stores," Roosa says. "We love spending weekends visiting secondhand stores and making personal finds for our home."

Roosa has put a lot of effort into making the rental home her own. The kitchen is enlivened with colorful tile stickers, and the ceiling features floating arrangements of flowers and fabric.

The secret of a green home

Ren is Roosa's sociable companion and lap cat.

Houseplants play a significant role in the home's atmosphere. Many people ask how Roosa manages to keep them alive: according to her, the method is to forget about the plants and water them less frequently rather than too often.

The balcony is a lovely addition to the family's square footage.

The plants undoubtedly benefit from the abundant light, which is one of the home’s strengths. Large windows bring light into the kitchen in the mornings and into the living room in the evenings. Roosa particularly loves her golden pothos, which grows beautifully as a vine and can be arranged to climb the walls.

Roosa adores various wood tones and doesn’t believe in the often-repeated, restrictive rule.

"Many say that light and dark wood shouldn’t be combined in decor, but I don’t think that’s true. They naturally coexist in nature – of course, they go together."

Over the years, Roosa has learned an important decorating lesson: patterns, colors, and styles can be mixed.

The best decorating ideas come from Pinterest, movies, and TV shows.

"When I was younger, I might have left something lovely at the seconhand store because I thought it didn’t suit us. Nowadays, I think I’ll make it work."

Ideas from TV series and Pinterest

Roosa is passionate about DIY projects. She especially enjoys painting and has painted a shelf in her daughter's room with floral patterns, as well as a joint project they did together – a large dollhouse. Additionally, she paints paintings and does woodworking.

Roosa loves secondhand shopping. Most of their furniture and decor items are secondhand.

Roosa gets inspiration from Pinterest, as well as movies and TV shows. Most recently, she watched the series Daisy Jones & The Six and got the idea that a record player would fit perfectly in their home. Now, vinyl spins on the player in the family living room.

The bookshelf is one of Roosa’s most beloved elements in the home.

The large, old bookshelf in the living room is special to Roosa. She first saw a similar one on Pinterest and fell in love with it: the shelf was perfect and could hold all the books in their home. It later popped up on an online thrift shop, and after a long search, Roosa and her husband finally managed to get the bookshelf home – when it didn’t fit in the car, they luckily got help from Roosa’s father with his trailer.

The bookshelf holds even more meaning.

"I love books, I collect them, and I read a lot. It also feels like my personality is included in that shelf because my books are there."

Showing your own personality through interior design

Abundance and colorfulness were Roosa’s preference in her first home as well, though their decor was darker then. Now, she freely and creatively combines colors and patterns. Her taste and style have evolved over the years.

For Roosa, it’s important that a home reflects the personality of its inhabitants. To her, an enchanting home is one where the residents' style and personality are visible and felt.

"I love it when I walk into someone’s home and can already tell from the decor what kind of person lives there."
