Enchanting homes: In Amir’s industrial-inspired home, films take centre stage
A giant projector screen, a collection of a thousand films and a carefully designed soundscape. Amir’s home is a film enthusiast’s paradise, where industrial minimalism meets warm cosiness.
Stepping into the Lumo home of Amir and his partner Mette, located in Emil Aaltonen’s old shoe factory, the first thing that catches the eye is the massive projector screen on the living room wall. Shelves lining the walls hold over a thousand films. The collection has grown over the years through flea market finds and new purchases, reflecting Amir’s wide-ranging taste – from action and comedy to thrillers.
“I’ve been collecting films since I was a kid, back in primary school. First on VHS, then DVD, and now Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray,” Amir explains.
Film plays a central role in Amir’s home, and together with his partner, he has created a harmonious living space. Their interior design philosophy could be summed up in one word: balance.
“Consistency is important – everything has to fit together,” he says.
Light walls and abundant natural light from the windows balance the darker tones in the décor. Large elements like the screen and a giant mirror won in a raffle blend harmoniously with smaller details. The speakers are placed symmetrically in the living room. The colour palette, combining light and dark, remains consistent throughout the home.
Lumo paints brought warmth
The home’s original all-white interior felt too glossy and cold for Amir and his partner. Thanks to the Lumo paint benefit, the decision to repaint was easy.
“This current shade is more calming,” Amir says, describing the warm, light brown used on the living room and bedroom walls.
The colour choice reflects Amir and Mette’s style perfectly. They favour earthy, warm tones and natural materials. The interior is rooted in industrial minimalism, softened with warm hues and wood.
One of the home’s standout features is its high ceilings – one of the reasons the couple wanted to move in. They had previously lived in the same building but in a different flat. From this fourth-floor home, there’s a lush view over the park.
“The view is pure luxury – so much greenery, it’s really calming,” Amir says.
A place for friends and recharging alone
The high ceilings also made it possible to install a cinema-sized screen. “The bigger the screen, the more impressive the film experience,” Amir points out.
Amir and Mette’s home is designed around the cinematic experience. Four speakers are strategically placed around the room to create a surround-sound feel – front and back, so the sound comes from every direction.
“It’s the same kind of soundscape you get in a real cinema,” Amir notes.
Although Amir enjoys watching films on his own, their home often serves as a social gathering spot. Films are frequently watched together – though not always.
“I like hosting when we have guests. I want people to feel good about coming here,” Amir says.
Most important of all, their home offers a space to recharge and relax – whether that’s alone or in the company of friends.
