Hyvinkää for new residents - here's what to know before moving to Hyvinkää

Hyvinkää is a lively, small town on the main railway line in the northern part of Uusimaa. The city has around 47 000 inhabitants. Hyvinkää offers a wide range of housing options, both in rural-like settlements and in the urban landscape of the city centre. Hyvinkää's centre offers a comprehensive range of services, largely concentrated in the Willa shopping centre. The name of the shopping centre is rooted in the old wool (in Finnish villa) factory in the centre of Hyvinkää, after which the area is also named Tehdas (in English factory). Lumo homes also offer rental apartments in the Tehdas district, in an excellent location.
To the north of the Tehdas is the residential area of Mustamännistö. Construction in the Mustamännistö area began in the 1920s, when wooden houses were built for the wool factory workers. In the 1940s and 1950s, stone apartment blocks began to be built in the area, for example to house railway workers, and this is also the period when the rental apartments in the Mustamännistö owned by Lumo Homes area were built. In addition to these areas, Lumo homes also offer rental apartments in Hangonsilta and rental apartments in Hakala.

An old railway town

Hyvinkää was originally built along the railway line that connected Helsinki with Hämeenlinna. The primary construction site for the railway was founded on uninhabited forest land in 1857. The small population centre of workers grew gradually and expanded around the railway station and wool factory over the years. Hyvinkää received the title of town in 1960.

A green town with dozens of lakes

Hyvinkää has six large lakes of over a hundred hectares, along with dozens of smaller ones. There are also many nature reserves and excellent outdoor recreation areas across Hyvinkää. Ridasjärvi, Ritasaarensuo and Järvisuo are great areas for outdoor recreation and hiking.

A nice atmosphere in central Hyvinkää

Hyvinkää church is the landmark of the town. Made from pine and concrete, the triangular church was designed by Aarno Ruusuvuori in 1961. The Railway Museum is also a popular attraction among locals and visitors alike. The town centre has still has some old wooden houses that give it a nice and friendly feel. All in all, the centre of Hyvinkää is compact and functional, housing a range of events for the residents. Hyvinkää has also received national recognition for its functional centre: in 2015, it was selected as the best urban centre in Finland.
