  1. Write a letter. A hand-written letter or postcard delivered to your mailbox is a rare treat in this era of instant messages. It also rewards its sender: thinking about a friend, crafting something with your own hands and looking at a beautiful piece of paper alone are enough to spark joy. Maybe you’ll also get a letter back?
  2. Talk to flowers. Go over the care guidelines for each of your houseplants and make sure they’re getting the correct amount of water, light and nutrition. Spray them and speak to them. Plants have an incredible calming influence whether they’re growing in the woods or on your windowsill.
  3. Get things done. Get around to that unpleasant task you’ve been putting off. Sort out your closet, wash the windows, fix that thing. Take a moment to admire your accomplishment and give yourself a pat on the back.
  4. Learn a new skill. You might need to look at your phone for this: think about something you’ve always wanted to learn and search for it on YouTube. Follow the instructions on the video step by step to learn a skill like doing a reverse French braid, folding an origami swan or making a bath broom for sauna. Don’t forget about crafts! Maybe now would be a good time to start that slightly more challenging knitting project?
  5. Do nothing. Lazing about isn’t a waste of time, as it promotes recovery, boosts creativity and helps with problem-solving. You can also disguise your idleness as the more socially accepted act of meditation: lay down on your back, close your eyes and focus on your breathing or relax each part of your body from head to toe one at a time until you’re floating in a sweet state of deep relaxation.
